Our Website Privacy Policy

Privacy Policy:

version 2014.01 published Jan 30, 2014.

Cookie Notification:

We use cookies. Use of our site implies your approval of our cookie use. We use them both for technical requirements and for analytical purposes. More on what we use is explained below in this document, along with information on how you can block any or all of the items we use.

General Privacy Policy:

We respect your privacy but also we understand that the modern web is social, crosses borders, oceans, and websites, and that there are real benefits to engaged web visitors by connecting our site to other services. We may change our privacy policy at any time and for any reason we feel necessary. We do not need to give advance notice nor do we expect to do so before a change.

Advertising and product purchase content which does, or may in the future, appear on our site, may be served by Google, Amazon, and other external providers; their privacy policies apply to said content, including setting cookies and web beacons.

We use 3rd-party and on-site analytics from Google, Google subsidiary DoubleClick (the DoubleClick enhancements to standard Google Analytics help us better understand our readers’ demographics and interests) and StatCounter, sharing buttons and analytical tools from Shareaholic, statistics and enhanced services from the global WordPress.com cloud (our own site is on a private, “self-hosted” version of WordPress, not at WordPress.com, but we connect to several of their services to help you subscribe to our posts, speed up image display, provide enhanced features, and get analytics on our visitors in the “blogosphere”).

Social Media connection “widgets” from Facebook, Twitter, and others, including soon widgets from Google+ and Pinterest provide social posting and viewing in our sidebar, easy ways to Follow, Like, Circle, Pin, or otherwise add us to your networks. Those networks receive information that you visited our site simply by you coming to our site, even if you do not interact with their widgets.

Our visitor comments in our “News” Section and at other comment-enabled pages, are via the Disqus web-wide enhanced comment platform where you may already have an ID from using it at sites like CNN, The Atlantic, Fast Company, and thousands of other News, Analysis, and blog sites. Your comments here can be easily found by readers of those sites, and your other comments at other sites can be found easily from your comments here. We do that to help create a global community of informed people who read and comment on items of interest across all the web, large and small, corporate and private. That is Disqus’ strength, but be aware that your comments are discoverable. Even if we used basic comments, they would still be visible to the world, just less cross-site-findable. We have chosen to go with community-building on a global scale so we went with Disqus. Visitor comments, reviews, and other user-created content becomes property of Viapark Hotel, which we may edit, delete, promote, reuse for advertising, marketing, or any other lawful purposes. Thanks for visiting and sharing your experience with us!

All these independent companies’ own policies are easily found at their websites and by searching. We’ve linked to the most common ones we use for your convenience. You are responsible for keeping up with their changes in privacy policy.

In general, if you can see a button, widget, Like/Follow/Circle/Pin/Share type of feature, a comment box, or other obvious external-company features, you should assume that cookies are being set and read by them and their partners, and they are tracking who visits the site. You should assume that for any site on the Modern Social Web, not just ours.

Like most sites beyond very simple static pages, we use cookies ourselves, so that our servers can properly operate as you navigate around the site. Likewise our site requires JavaScript to be enabled in your browser in order to see anything resembling a meaningful and attractive, readable display. It will work without it but will be very ugly, and you will see many menus and code items before getting to the actual text and images you want to read and view.

How to block most tracking and analytics:

Don’t like any kind of tracking? We recommend Ghostery for Firefox, Chrome, and Internet Explorer if you do not want to be tracked on the web and do not want details of your visits in our analytics. As alternatives, we recommend Disconnect for Firefox, Chrome, and Safari. We recommend BluHell Firewall for Firefox and Firefox Mobile if you want a simple. blocking solution with no configuration.

We are pleased you are at our site even if you block all of our add-on features. Some functions of our site will not work if you block all third-party trackers and widgets, including comment reading and posting, the social media sidebars for Twitter, Facebook, and other networks. However, the basic look and feel and all our in-house created and posted information will appear substantially as intended, if you use one of those blockers with sensible settings. We cannot help you with those settings, but our team uses them themselves.

Some things cannot be blocked:

As with any website, the fundamental technology of the web and the internet means we do receive basic information about your visit even if you use a blocker, such as your browser, IP address which can imply general location, type of computer or device, operating system, configuration of your browser, and more.

Use of our site implies your agreement with this policy.
